Me: Viv, we have some exciting news. You know how you’re always saying you want to be a big sister?
Viv: Yeah?
Me: Well you’re going to be a big sister!
Viv bounces up and down on the couch, huge smile. Then her face darkens.
Viv: But mom, I’ve thought about it, and I don’t want a little brother. I want a little sister.
Dave: Well, good news, honey, you’re going to have a little sister!
(So now Viv thinks you can just order up the gender of your choice like an ice cream flavor. But whatever, it’s true. We’re having a girl.)
This news produces another huge smile from Viv, then…
Viv: Can I go back to watching my show now?
Since I grew up with a brother, I do feel badly that Viv will not get to have a boy sibling, because they are wonderful, but mostly I am really excited and relieved. I can reuse the baby clothes, they can easily share a room, and I’ll probably never be peed on in the face.
As for raising sisters, well, I have no idea, other than I’m pretty sure I won’t bring the baby to magic trolls that wipe away her memories of her big sister’s ice powers and then keep them apart their whole childhoods. So wish me luck, and leave your advice in the comments!
Congratulations!!!!!!!!
my child is destined to be an only .. she tests me on a daily basis, and while she’s a terror of a pre-adolescent (I think that’s what 7yr olds are called) she was a great baby … i fear the opposite for a future one
Thanks! You are scaring me – I thought 7 was supposed to be an easy age! I am very, very curious what baby #2 will be like. We are praying for a sleeper 🙂
I love love LOVE having two girls! Our whole house sparkles! Literally. Invest in a good vacuum cleaner because everything is glitter times 2. And it’s awesome. 🙂 Congrats!!
Love that advice! Thanks Hannah.
Congratulations to you & your family!! I’ve been following your blog for a while now and in a way feel like I can relate. I think our daughters are close in age (mine born 1/22/11) and we’ve experienced secondary fertility issues (completely unexpected in our case), but I’m happy to be able to share we are expecting again next spring! Long story short your blog has brought many smiles to me and I’ve been routing for you guys all along. So happy for you guys!
Very close in age! Do you know what you’re having yet? I think our 4-year spread is going to rock! Gotta train those big girls to be helpers. Thank you so much for your support – glad you are reading the blog.
Just found out on fri we are having another girl too (13 weeks)! Our daughter also requested a sister. Phew! Good thing for 50/50 odds! I agree I think the 4 yr gap will be awesome!!
Best Wishes! So exciting. I was given two energy filled boys, no girls here. My partner seems to only be able to make little boy creatures 🙂 I felt the same way though about the reusing clothes, etc. It does save in the long run!! Enjoy this time, I am sure your Viv is going to be a great big sister!

Thank you! I thought I knew a lot about pregnancy but I only just learned that the man’s DNA determines baby gender. So my husband only has himself to blame for being outnumbered.
